What makes me different?
Aside from my 17+ years of experience as a translator, there are two things that set me apart from other translation providers:
- I offer bespoke English translations for tourism and hospitality. I don’t just translate your content. I help you tell the unique story of your destination and engage with travellers and the local community.
- I offer translation and DTP (desktop publishing) as a combined service. This means you receive ready-to-publish translations implemented in Adobe InDesign or Affinity Publisher. No need for separate designers or project managers, so you save time and money.
Why choose a solo translator over a larger translation company?
There are lots of translation companies out there that claim they can translate every type of content into every language. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Or does it…?
Unfortunately, many translation companies now care more about quantity than quality. They can deliver very large projects in double-quick time by choosing the cheapest translator from their freelancer pool, splitting your project between multiple translators and using AI to pre-translate your content.
Some translation companies even auction your project on a first-come, first-served basis, so your translator could be absolutely anyone. This is typically an inexperienced translator who does not specialise in your industry.
When you choose me, you are getting a specialist. You receive high-quality, publication-ready content at a fair price. And you have a partner you can trust, who remains on hand to answer any questions you may have.
When you work with a translation company, you are dealing with multiple different intermediaries (several project managers, DTP designers, freelance translators). Each step means additional cost for you. What if you could work directly with one single translator/project manager/DTP expert? It’s a win-win situation!
When you get a bad translation, it’s not just a waste of money – it’s also a waste of your time. Because then you need to get somebody to fix it, which is both costly and time-consuming. When you use a professional, you get it done right the first time. So you have peace of mind and can focus your time on other important areas of your business.
Large translation companies have lots of clients. But when you work directly with me and have your own dedicated translator, I will go above and beyond to make sure you get the best-possible result at the right price. If you have a question or want to change something, I’m just an email or phone call away. If I spot an error in your original content, I’ll let you know so you can fix it on your side. This isn’t a one-off transaction; this is is the beginning of lasting relationship.
Having the same translator for every project – and someone who knows your brand intimately and understands your needs – means content that is perfectly tailored to your needs. The right words, every time.
When you have your own translator, you have an expert on hand to answer any linguistic or English-communication-related questions you may have. Will your idea work in English-speaking markets? Are there any negative connotations associated with a particular term? Do you need several options to choose from for a potential tagline for a new advertising campaign? Or perhaps you’d like to use different content to target specific English-speaking markets (US, British, Irish, Canadian, Australian, international, etc.). Whatever your question, I’m just a phone call or email away.
Why not just use AI?
Of course, it seems cheaper (free) and faster (practically instant) to use AI to translate your content. However, it may turn out to be more expensive and more time-consuming when you factor in the subsequent editing required. And when you consider the potential reputational damage of publishing a bad translation, using an AI tool to translate your content may be worse than having no translation at all. Ask yourself: if you wouldn’t trust AI to create your original language content, then why trust it to write your English content? A professional English translator offers many advantages:
The most important, and most obvious, reason. There is simply no comparison between the quality you get from an established professional compared to that from using AI. Especially for the kind of creative and marketing content that is typical of the tourism industry.
AI doesn’t understand your content. AI doesn’t let you know if something doesn’t make sense. AI frequently gets things wrong. Can you take the risk of publishing substandard content online or in your printed materials? Potential customers are very good at detecting when something has been written by AI and it’s an immediate turn-off. Only a skilled professional translator can deliver content for your website and promotional materials that will generate actual sales for you.
Sustainability concerns all of us. You may already be taking action in various other ways such as by promoting sustainable tourism, using recycled paper or introducing cycle-to-work schemes. But have you considered the environmental impact of using AI? Composing a 100-word text with AI results in up to 1.5 litres of water consumption. This is the equivalent energy of 14 LED light bulbs lighting continuously for one hour. And that’s just for a couple of paragraphs! Using a professional translator is the obvious choice for the future of our planet.
There are many additional services that only a professional can offer, such as adapting idioms, handling nuanced cultural references, providing localised imagery, identifying errors in the original content and, in my case, offering DTP design.
Entering confidential data in an AI tool means risking it being preserved, duplicated or accessed by people who are not meant to see it. When you work directly with a professional translator, they – and only they – will have access to your data.
