Kärnten Werbung

Kärnten Werbung is the official marketing organisation for the beautiful mountainous state of Carinthia in southeastern Austria. Carinthia welcomes around 6–7 million international visitors per year, with higher volumes coming in summer.

Kärnten Werbung provides information about the region and publishes an extensive range of brochures in German, English and other languages to promote the region at home and abroad.

Promoting winter travel

Carinthia is somewhat different to other Austrian regions like Tyrol and Salzburgerland in that summer is the strongest season in terms of visitor numbers. Hiking, mountain biking and lake holidays are popular, especially with visitors from neighbouring countries such as Italy and Czechia.

However, Carinthia has a vast range of ski resorts to rival other regions in Austria. To promote winter travel to the state, Kärnten Werbung created a new 65-page brochure in German outlining the attractions and activities available in the 2025/26 winter season.

They came to me and asked me to translate the brochure into English as part of a campaign to attract more international visitors, especially families, interested in skiing holidays.

Challenges

In any translation of a brochure or magazine, preserving the original layout is of utmost concern. I worked closely with the designer of the original German brochure to ensure that the new English content fitted the on-page space requirements and matched the graphics and imagery.

Another area of focus was consistent terminology, especially since skiing and other winter sports have a lot of specific vocabulary. A common mistake when translating a large project is using different words in different places for the same concept, which will cause confusion for the reader. For instance, the words ‘toboggan’, ‘sled’ and ‘sledge’ are often used interchangeably for the German word ‘Rodel’ in the marketing materials of many ski resorts, giving the impression these are three different activities.

Understanding local markets is vital when translating marketing content. The client’s previous marketing content had retained the word ‘Advent’ in English, however aside from the term ‘Advent calendar’, ‘Advent’ is generally only used in a religious context in English. Terms such as ‘Advent markets’ or ‘Advent mood’ sound clumsy to the reader and are instantly recognisable as poor translations. With this in mind, I opted for ‘Christmas in Carinthia’ for the German term ‘Advent in Kärnten’, the alliteration being an added bonus!

Publication

At the end of the project, Kärnten Werbung had a print-ready English text incorporated into the original brochure layout. The translation reflected their brand and vision for the region and helped them to attract more international visitors during the upcoming winter season.

My English translation is published online on the Visit Carinthia website and is also available in print form.

Results

The proof is in the pudding! International visitor numbers to Carinthia for the 2025/26 winter season are up 6.5% compared to the 2024/25 season (970,516 vs 909,911).1

Providing high-quality content in English doesn’t just target visitors from English-speaking countries such as the UK and USA, but also people from all over Europe and the rest of the world. Those who speak English but not German would refer to the English-language content when researching and booking their holiday.
